COLORFUL CULTURE

For centuries, Oaxaca has been known as a center for art and creativity, with many famed artists creating works that represent their personal visions and native heritage. Today, Oaxacan art is still thriving. Notable figures include Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Rodolfo Morales, and others. In addition to these contemporary pieces of art, the city also has a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship in the form of textiles, pottery, woodworking, metalwork, leatherwork masks and more. Every village in Oaxaca has its own special style of craft making. Today you can find these handcrafts all across the city - in marketsplaces , galleries , museums and festivals alike.

ANCIENT MONUMENTS

The Oaxaca region includes a number of archaeological sites, most notably Monte Albán and Mitla. These two cities were founded by the Zapotecs in the 1st century BCE and developed into powerful hubs of both political and cultural life. Later, Mitla was taken over by the Mixtecs and is now renowned for its stunning array of stone patterns. Other notable ruins include Atzompa, Yagul, and Lambityeco. For centuries, each has been a testament to the incredible civilizations of ancient Oaxaca.
